Hyson Road Water Treatment Facility

This state-of-the-art treatment facility utilizes a groundwater water source, green sand filtration technology, a backwash water recovery system and high-tech monitoring and control systems to insure a safe, reliable source of drinking water.

The source water for the Hyson Road Water Treatment Facility is supplied by two deep wells (approx 1400' deep) which pump water from Potomac-Raritan-Magothy Aquifer system. This abundant supply of clean water enters the treatment facility through a 16" water transmission line, where it undergoes a treatment process for the removal of Iron and Manganese. Once the water enters the plant (called influent) it is injected with a combination of Chlorine and Potassium Permanganate, which are used to oxidize the iron and manganese that are in solution. Once the oxidation (chemical reaction) process is completed, it makes the iron and manganese particles clump together so that it can be filtered out of the water by specially designed sand filters. This treatment process is commonly known as greensand or Ferro sand filtration. Once the water passes through the sand filtration bed it exits the plant (called effluent). Then pH adjustment and chlorine to prevent biological growth in the distribution system are added to the finished water. The water then travels through two chlorine contact tanks to provide the proper mixing time for the chlorine to react with the water and is then delivered to the distribution system for consumption by our customers.

These treatment plants use the latest computer controlled operating systems and water monitoring programs to ensure optimum water quality. This provides the residents of Jackson Township with a reliable, safe source of water. The Jackson MUA has converted all of our facilities to SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) which enables plant operators to monitor and control all our facilities from one central location. This not only cuts operating costs, it enables the operator to have greater control and flexibility over the entire system.
